Copenhagen Unveils Innovative ‘DestinationPay’ – A Global Tourism Reward Model

Copenhagen has rolled out an innovative global tourism reward program, DestinationPay, broadening the reach of its successful CopenPay initiative that was initially launched in the summer of 2024. This groundbreaking program offers rewards to tourists for making sustainable choices during their visit to the Danish capital.

The DestinationPay model signifies a substantial shift in the way destinations approach sustainable tourism. It provides visitors with tangible benefits for adopting environmentally conscious behaviors. These include:

  • Rewards for using public transportation
  • Participation in city clean-up activities
  • Visiting green-certified attractions
  • Choosing sustainable dining options

The program is an extension of the original CopenPay initiative’s success, which saw a significant expansion in May 2024. Tourism officials have reported strong visitor engagement with the sustainability-focused rewards system. This has not only helped reduce the environmental impact of tourism but also enhanced the visitor experience.

“This program demonstrates how destinations can lead the way in responsible tourism while still providing excellent experiences for visitors,” said a Copenhagen tourism spokesperson. The model is being closely monitored by other European cities contemplating similar sustainable tourism initiatives.
