Joby Aviation’s Hybrid VTOL Aircraft Marks Historic First Flight

Joby Aviation has achieved a significant milestone with the successful first flight of its innovative turbine-electric, autonomous VTOL demonstrator aircraft. This marks a major leap forward in hybrid aviation technology. The historic flight took place on November 7, 2024, at the company’s Marina, California facility, a mere three months after the concept was first unveiled in a partnership with L3Harris Technologies.

The hybrid aircraft seamlessly integrates Joby’s tried-and-tested S4 electric air taxi platform with a turbine-electric powertrain and SuperPilot autonomous flight technology. This design aims to deliver significantly greater range and payload capability than traditional all-electric aircraft. The turbine generator acts as a range extender, potentially offering operational capabilities akin to Joby’s hydrogen variant that accomplished a 561-mile flight in 2024.

“Our vertical integration puts us in a unique position to deliver on this goal, moving from concept to demonstration at a pace that is unprecedented in today’s aerospace and defense industry,” said JoeBen Bevirt, Joby’s founder and CEO. The demonstrator is strategically positioned for both extended commercial air taxi operations and defense applications, with operational demonstrations planned for 2026.
