Global Tourism Triumphs: Full Recovery and Record $1.6 Trillion in 2024
The global tourism industry has officially triumphed over the pandemic crisis, reaching a historic milestone in 2024. A record-breaking 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals were recorded globally, signifying a full recovery.
According to the latest data from UN Tourism, international tourism receipts surged to a staggering $1.6 trillion in 2024. This represents a 3% increase from 2023 and a 4% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in real terms.
The Middle East led the regional growth, boasting arrivals 32% above 2019 levels. Europe, on the other hand, maintained its position as the world’s largest destination region, welcoming 747 million tourists.
Africa experienced a 7% increase in arrivals compared to 2019, while the Americas recovered 97% of pre-pandemic levels. “The strong growth seen in tourism receipts is excellent news for economies around the world,” said UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.
The recovery has been driven by a combination of factors, including:
