Record-Breaking Holiday Travel Expected by TSA with Anticipation of 40M Passengers
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced an expected surge in holiday travel. Nearly 40 million passengers are anticipated to be screened between December 19 and January 2, marking a 6.2% increase compared to the previous year’s holiday period. The agency has identified December 20, 27, and 30 as the peak travel days of the 2024 holiday season.
This expected increase follows on the heels of TSA’s busiest-ever single day on December 1st, when over 3 million travelers were processed through U.S. airports as the Thanksgiving travel period concluded. Major airlines, including American and United, are preparing for the increased traffic and have made schedule adjustments to meet the demand.
The record-breaking numbers are indicative of a broader post-pandemic rebound in travel volumes. Airports nationwide are preparing with additional staffing and extended security checkpoint hours. TSA advises travelers to:
- Arrive at airports with extra time
- Stay informed through official social media channels for real-time updates during the peak travel period
