Elon Musk Forecasts a Future Where Work is Optional

Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a bold prediction about the future of work at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington D.C. He claimed that advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics will make employment optional within the next 10 to 20 years.

Speaking to investors, Musk drew a future scenario where work would be akin to “playing sports or a video game”. He likened it to the choice of growing vegetables in your backyard when you could simply buy them at a store. The tech mogul, currently worth about $470 billion, envisions a future with millions of robots in the workforce, leading to enhanced productivity.

Musk’s prediction aligns with Tesla’s broader AI strategy. He anticipates that 80% of the company’s value will come from his Optimus humanoid robots. Musk suggests a “universal high income” system would sustain society without the necessity of work. However, economists question the feasibility of his 10-20 year timeline due to current limitations in robotics technology and costs.
