Groundbreaking $55M Aviation Complex at Kansas City Airport
The Kansas City Aviation Department has chosen Airside Innovation Missouri LLC to develop the remaining 20 acres at the Kansas City Downtown Airport-Wheeler Field (KMKC). This landmark $55 million project will include a state-of-the-art 15,000-square-foot terminal building, along with over 150,000 square feet of new hangar, office, and maintenance facilities.
The development, known as “Project Lima,” will be anchored by the Kansas City-based Apex Aero Center, serving as the new fixed base operation (FBO). The project received unanimous approval from the Kansas City Council in September, and the developers signed their long-term lease last month.
“This development signifies the continued growth of MKC and its importance to the city as an economic driver,” said Melissa Cooper, Director of Aviation for Kansas City. The project emphasizes workforce development and community access to aviation careers. It particularly targets underrepresented communities through partnerships with the Red Tail Academy.
