Tesla’s Cybercab Strategy: Validated by Waymo’s Rideshare Data
New data from Waymo’s California Public Utilities Commission filings reveals that a staggering 90% of robotaxi trips accommodate two or fewer passengers. This significant finding validates Tesla’s controversial decision to design the Cybercab as a two-seater vehicle.
Karim Dia Toubajie, Toyota’s Lead Product Designer, analyzed the data. His findings show that:
- 71% of trips have only one passenger
- A mere 15% of trips have two passengers
These findings lend robust support to Tesla’s approach with the wheel-less, lidar-free Cybercab, which was unveiled in October 2024. The company has planned to kickstart production before 2027, with an expected price tag under $30,000.
Tesla’s robotaxi service is currently on an expansion spree to five new U.S. cities. The company is already operating autonomous rides in Austin, Texas, and California’s Bay Area using Model Y vehicles.
