London Considers Implementing New Tourist Tax on Overnight Stays
London is on the verge of introducing a new tourist tax aimed at overnight visitors. Mayor Sadiq Khan is reportedly contemplating a modest levy on hotel stays and short-term rentals. This proposed tax, potentially around 5% per night, is a component of the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill. This bill empowers local authorities to generate revenue through tourist levies.
Initial estimates indicate that this measure could yield up to £250 million ($328 million) annually. These funds would be reinvested into London’s infrastructure, transportation, and tourism services. The levy would apply to a range of accommodations, including:
- Hotels
- Airbnb rentals
- Bed and breakfasts
- Guesthouses
The primary objective of this tax is to stimulate the local economy and solidify London’s standing as a leading global tourism destination.
