OpenAI Aims for 220 Million Paid ChatGPT Subscribers by 2030
OpenAI has set ambitious growth targets, projecting that 220 million people will pay for ChatGPT subscriptions by 2030. This represents a massive expansion from the current 35 million paid users as of July 2024. The goal is to increase the paid user conversion rate from 5% to 8.5% of weekly active users, positioning ChatGPT alongside the world’s largest subscription services.
The company recently launched ChatGPT’s new shopping research feature on November 24. This feature allows users to get personalized product recommendations and complete purchases through integrated checkout with partners like Shopify, Spanx, and Glossier. In an effort to expand global accessibility, OpenAI also introduced the affordable ChatGPT Go plan at $5 per month in markets like India.
With ChatGPT now reaching 800 million weekly active users as of October 2024 and generating over $13 billion in annual revenue, OpenAI expects about 20% of future revenue to come from new product categories beyond subscriptions. The company continues to roll out advanced features including GPT-5.1 Pro for enhanced conversational AI and group chat functionality in select regions.
