Iberia Pioneers Transoceanic Route to Boston with World’s First A321XLR
Spanish airline Iberia has etched its name in aviation history books by becoming the first carrier to operate transoceanic routes using the state-of-the-art Airbus A321XLR narrow-body aircraft. The maiden flight took off from Madrid-Barajas Airport, heading for Boston on November 14, 2024. This event marks a significant milestone in the evolution of long-haul aviation technology.
The A321XLR boasts an unparalleled range of up to 4,000 nautical miles (7,500 kilometers), which is a 15% improvement over its predecessor, the A321LR model. This extended range capability paves the way for airlines to serve new transatlantic routes with smaller, more fuel-efficient aircraft, all while ensuring passenger comfort on extended journeys.
Over the coming months, Iberia plans to roll out seven additional A321XLR aircraft, with initial destinations including Boston and Washington DC. The airline anticipates that this fleet expansion will facilitate the introduction of new long-haul destinations and increase capacity on existing routes. This move aligns with its strategic focus on American markets and positions it at the cutting edge of aviation innovation.
