FAA Prohibits Private Jets at 12 Major US Airports Amid Government Shutdown

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen), effectively banning general and business aviation flights at 12 of the nation’s busiest airports. These include Chicago O’Hare, Dallas Fort Worth International, Denver International, and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson. The restrictions came into effect at 12 a.m. EST on November 10.

This unprecedented move primarily affects airports served by commercial airlines. It comes at a time when air traffic controllers are working without pay due to the ongoing government shutdown. Ed Bolen, NBAA President, and CEO, criticized the restrictions, stating they are “disproportionately impacting general aviation, an industry that creates more than a million jobs, generates $340 billion in economic impact, and supports humanitarian flights every day.”

Exceptions are limited to based aircraft, emergency, medical, law enforcement, firefighting, and military operations. These restrictions form part of the broader FAA emergency measures. These measures also include a 10% reduction in commercial flights at 40 high-traffic airports nationwide.
