AOPA Criticizes GA Airport Restrictions as ‘Draconian Precedent’
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has vehemently criticized the FAA’s decision to entirely prohibit general aviation flights at 12 major airports. The association has labeled this move as a “disproportionate response” that establishes a “draconian precedent” for the aviation industry.
AOPA Senior Vice President, Jim Coon, conceded that flight reductions amid the government shutdown were justifiable. However, he expressed severe criticism towards the total exclusion of general aviation. He stated, “The decision over the weekend to completely lock out all general and business aviation at numerous airports across the country is a disproportionate response.”
Jim McClay, AOPA Director of Airspace, underscored that barring general aviation operations from major airports jeopardizes an industry crucial to national infrastructure and local economies. The restrictions impact airports including O’Hare, JFK, LAX, and other significant hubs, compelling private and business aircraft to seek alternative airports during the ongoing air traffic control staffing crisis.
