OpenAI Inks Historic $38B Cloud Computing Deal with Amazon Web Services
OpenAI has inked a historic seven-year, $38 billion cloud computing agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) — marking its inaugural major partnership with a top-tier cloud provider. This deal equips OpenAI with extensive access to Nvidia GPUs, powering the training for future AI models and securing the compute needed to meet global demand.
As per the agreement announced on November 4, 2025, OpenAI will commence running workloads on AWS infrastructure immediately. This includes leveraging hundreds of thousands of Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) in the U.S., with an expansion plan set for the upcoming years. The partnership equips OpenAI with Amazon EC2 UltraServers, featuring hundreds of thousands of chips, and the scalability to tens of millions of CPUs for its advanced generative AI workloads.
“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”
This deal signifies a substantial shift from OpenAI’s previous dependence on Microsoft, diversifying its cloud infrastructure partnerships. Following the announcement, Amazon’s stock closed 4% higher, reaching a record closing high.
