OpenAI and AWS Enter Historic $38B Cloud Computing Partnership, Signaling Independence from Microsoft

OpenAI has secured a monumental seven-year, $38 billion cloud computing partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This marks the first major collaboration of the ChatGPT maker outside its longstanding partnership with Microsoft. The deal equips OpenAI with immediate access to hundreds of thousands of state-of-the-art Nvidia GPUs through Amazon EC2 UltraClusters, enabling the company to scale its AI workloads dramatically.

“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”

The agreement comes just days after OpenAI restructured its relationship with Microsoft, ending the latter’s exclusive cloud provider status. This strategic move provides OpenAI with operational flexibility as it pursues its ambitious $1.4 trillion infrastructure investment plan over the next five years.

For Amazon, the deal signifies a significant victory in the competitive cloud market. Analysts estimate that it could boost AWS’s backlog by approximately 20% in Q4 2025.
