Apple Targets Chromebooks and Windows PCs with a New Budget MacBook

Apple Inc. is reportedly in the process of developing its first low-cost laptop, codenamed “J700”. This new MacBook is designed to directly compete with Google Chromebooks and entry-level Windows PCs in the education and business markets. The budget-friendly Mac is aimed at students, businesses, and casual users who primarily perform basic tasks such as web browsing, document editing, and light content creation.

According to sources from Bloomberg, the device is currently undergoing testing at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters and has entered early production with overseas suppliers. Apple plans to launch this budget-friendly Mac in the first half of 2026, marking a significant strategic shift for the company, which has traditionally focused on premium products.

This move comes as Apple seeks to expand its market share beyond its traditional high-end customer base. The current global desktop operating system market is dominated by Windows with a 66.14% share, while macOS holds just 4.15% and Chrome OS captures 1.34%.
