Hurricane Melissa Triggers Major Cruise Line Itinerary Adjustments in the Caribbean
Hurricane Melissa, a Category 4 storm with winds reaching 140 mph, has compelled major cruise lines to implement significant itinerary changes across the Caribbean. Royal Caribbean has relocated Icon of the Seas from its Eastern Caribbean route to the Western Caribbean. The ship is now docking at Cozumel and Roatan, instead of St. Maarten and St. Thomas.
Several airlines have issued travel waivers in response to the storm. United Airlines is offering flexibility for flights through Montego Bay and Providenciales until October 29, allowing travelers to rebook without penalty. The storm’s impact extends beyond cruise operations, causing disruptions in air travel as well.
- Over 144 flight cancellations
- 30 delays reported at major Caribbean airports
These disruptions have left thousands of travelers stranded.
Freedom of the Seas has also adjusted its sailing, skipping Grand Turk and replacing it with a call at Puerto Plata. While cruise lines work tirelessly to ensure passenger safety and satisfaction, Hurricane Melissa underscores the ongoing challenges natural disasters pose to Caribbean tourism operations during peak season.
