OpenAI Expands Its Reach with Acquisition of Mac AI Interface Startup, Sky
OpenAI has recently acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the innovative startup behind Sky. Sky is a unique natural language interface for Mac computers, capable of understanding screen content and executing tasks across various applications. The announcement of this acquisition was made on October 24, 2025, and it brings the entire 12-person team of former Apple engineers under the umbrella of OpenAI.
Among Sky’s team are developers who have previously worked on Apple’s Shortcuts app. This app was originally known as Workflow before Apple’s acquisition in 2017. “We’re building a future where ChatGPT doesn’t just respond to your prompts, it helps you get things done,” said Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, emphasizing the potential of this acquisition.
OpenAI’s acquisition of Sky signals a significant push beyond web-based AI, moving towards desktop integration. This could potentially allow ChatGPT to perform automated workflows directly on users’ computers. This is just the latest in a series of strategic purchases by OpenAI, which includes recent acquisitions such as Statsig ($1.1 billion) and Jony Ive’s AI device startup ($6.5 billion).
