Revolutionary “Sport Pilot 2.0” Rule Ushers in a New Era for Recreational Aviation

Today marks a historic milestone for recreational aviation as the FAA’s MOSAIC (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification) rule, popularly known as “Sport Pilot 2.0,” officially takes effect.

Starting from October 22, 2025, an estimated 7,000+ sport pilots are now permitted to fly approximately 70% of the general aviation fleet. This includes popular four-seat aircraft such as the Cessna 150, 152, 172, and 182, in addition to numerous Piper models. This revolutionary change supersedes the previous 1,320-pound weight limit, introducing a clean stall speed criterion of up to 59 knots.

Private pilots can also enjoy sport pilot privileges, requiring only a driver’s license in place of a medical certificate when flying qualifying aircraft. These aircraft can accommodate up to four seats and one passenger during daylight hours. This expansion represents the most significant advancement in recreational aviation in over two decades, making flying more accessible and affordable for thousands of pilots.

EAA President Jack Pelton hailed it as “one of the most significant rule packages for general aviation in the past 75 years,” opening up tremendous possibilities for current and future pilots, flight schools, and manufacturers.
