Global Crypto Platforms Disrupted by Major AWS Outage
A massive Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage on Monday morning brought down major cryptocurrency exchanges and financial platforms, highlighting the fragility of centralized cloud infrastructure in the decentralized crypto world.
The disruption, which began at 3:11 AM Eastern Time in AWS’s critical US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia, affected Coinbase, Robinhood, Snapchat, Roblox, and hundreds of other services for approximately three hours. The outage was caused by DNS resolution failures affecting DynamoDB, AWS’s core database service.
“We’re aware many users are currently unable to access Coinbase due to an AWS outage,” the exchange’s support team said, adding “All funds are safe.” Robinhood similarly confirmed that “services are impacted due to issues at AWS, one of our third-party vendors.“
The incident reignited debates about crypto’s reliance on centralized infrastructure, with industry experts noting that roughly 37% of Ethereum nodes run on AWS. The disruption potentially cost businesses hundreds of billions in lost productivity and transactions, underscoring the need for truly decentralized infrastructure solutions.
