Key Tourist Routes in Portugal Guaranteed Amidst October Airport Strike

Portugal’s airports are set to maintain essential services amidst a strike by ground handling workers scheduled for several weekends in October 2025. This move ensures that critical tourist connections remain operational.

The arbitration tribunal has ruled that flights connecting the mainland to the islands, as well as 20% of international flights, must be guaranteed during the industrial action by the Metallurgical and Related Industries Union (SIMA). The strike is set to affect operations on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the following dates:

  • October 10-12, 2025
  • October 17-19, 2025
  • October 24-26, 2025

The strike will impact Menzies, the ground handling company servicing most airlines in Portugal, including TAP Air Portugal, Ryanair, and EasyJet. While mainland domestic flights may experience delays, inter-island flights and mainland-island connections remain fully protected. This ensures continuity for both domestic and international tourism.

Portuguese tourism authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with airlines to minimize disruptions. Major travel agencies are adjusting packages to provide flexibility, while hotels and resorts have been advised to inform guests about potential impacts and provide alternative arrangements.
