FAA Unveils Pioneering eVTOL Pilot Training Regulations

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently announced a revolutionary certification rule for powered-lift aircraft pilots, marking the first new aircraft category since the introduction of helicopters in the 1940s.

Unveiled on October 22, 2024, this comprehensive 880-page rule establishes a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) that will remain in effect for a decade. The aim is to seamlessly integrate electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into U.S. airspace. Companies such as Archer Aviation and Joby are gearing up to launch commercial air taxi services in major cities within the coming year.

The rule paves the way for flexible pilot training pathways, allowing instruction with single flight controls as opposed to traditional dual-control systems. It applies helicopter operating requirements during vertical flight phases while adopting performance-based standards for cruise operations. The regulation will come into effect 60 days post Federal Register publication, with instrument proficiency requirements being implemented after 240 days.

“This historic rule will pave the way for accommodating wide-scale Advanced Air Mobility operations in the future,” stated FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker.
