New Lithium Battery Regulations for Smart Luggage Implemented by Airlines
Major international airlines have begun enforcing stricter regulations on smart luggage and lithium-ion batteries. These new rules, which significantly restrict battery-powered travel devices, took effect on October 1, 2025, unless specific safety conditions are met.
Under the updated rules, smart suitcases may only be carried in aircraft cabins if their lithium batteries are removable, turned off, and not charged during flight. Bags failing to meet these requirements will be prohibited from both carry-on and cargo areas. Emirates has been among the first major carriers to confirm implementation across all flights.
The regulations also affect power banks, wireless chargers, and smart backpacks. Travelers are now limited to:
- One power bank rated under 100 Watt Hours
Airlines and regulators say the measures reduce risks of fires, explosions, or gas leaks from overheating batteries at altitude. The standardization is expected to apply across most international airlines by the end of 2025.
