The Dawn of a New Era in Recreational Aviation: Sport Pilot 2.0 Takes Off on October 22

A historic transformation in recreational aviation is set to begin on October 22, 2025, when the FAA’s MOSAIC (Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification) rule takes effect. This groundbreaking regulation is set to dramatically expand opportunities for sport pilots nationwide.

The landmark regulation eliminates the previous 1,320-pound weight restriction for light sport aircraft. Instead, it uses stall speed as the primary criterion. This change means that sport pilots will now be able to fly approximately three-quarters of the general aviation fleet. This includes popular aircraft like:

  • Cessna 150
  • Cessna 152
  • Cessna 172
  • Various Piper models

“This is the most monumental and important step recreational aviation has taken in more than 20 years,” said EAA officials. The changes allow sport pilots to operate aircraft with up to four seats, retractable landing gear, and higher cruise speeds, with proper training and endorsements.

Over 7,000 current sport pilot certificate holders will immediately gain access to this expanded aircraft selection without additional paperwork or checkrides. Furthermore, the rule also opens doors for night flying and some commercial operations with appropriate endorsements.
