SoftBank’s $5.4B Acquisition of ABB Robotics: A Significant Step Towards “Physical AI”

SoftBank Group has recently announced a substantial acquisition of ABB’s robotics business unit for $5.375 billion. This move marks a significant milestone in CEO Masayoshi Son’s vision for “Physical AI” – the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics. The deal, which is subject to regulatory approvals, is anticipated to close in mid-to-late 2026.

The robotics division of ABB employs around 7,000 people globally and generates an annual revenue of $2.3 billion. It supplies industrial robots and automation equipment to manufacturers, including BMW. This acquisition will enhance SoftBank’s existing robotics investments, which include SoftBank Robotics Group, Berkshire Grey, AutoStore Holdings, and Agile Robots.

“SoftBank’s next frontier is physical AI,” said Masayoshi Son. “Together with ABB Robotics, we will unite world-class technology and talent under our shared vision to fuse Artificial Super Intelligence and robotics — driving a groundbreaking evolution that will propel humanity forward.”

This move signifies SoftBank’s commitment to its four key focus areas:

  • AI chips
  • AI robots
  • AI data centers
  • Energy
