New Smart Luggage Battery Regulations Implemented by Airlines from October
Airlines across the globe have enforced stricter regulations on smart luggage and lithium batteries. This move is in line with the new international aviation safety standards that commenced on October 1, 2025. The revised guidelines primarily target the use of lithium-ion batteries in both carry-on and checked luggage, aiming to minimize fire hazards during air travel.
Only smart suitcases with removable lithium batteries are allowed in cabins. These batteries must be switched off and not charged during the flight. Luggage that fails to meet these criteria are prohibited from both cabin and cargo hold. Among the first major airlines to affirm these new restrictions apply to all flights is Emirates.
The regulations also extend to external power banks and other battery-powered travel accessories. Airlines are only permitted to allow one power bank rated under 100 Watt Hours per passenger. The primary goal of these new standards is to prevent overheating incidents at high altitudes while ensuring passenger safety.
By the end of 2025, the policy is anticipated to be adopted across most international airlines. The aim is to have clearer battery restrictions that enhance security screening efficiency and provide uniform criteria across different carriers.
