Electra Expands Team and Facilities to Accelerate EL9 Aircraft Development

US-based startup, Electra, has recently made significant strides in its growth, doubling its workforce to 90 employees and expanding its facilities. This expansion is in line with the accelerated development of the hybrid-electric EL9 regional aircraft, which is set to make its first flight in 2027.

The company has inaugurated a new 15,000-square-foot hangar and a 6,000-square-foot office space at its headquarters located at Manassas Regional Airport, Virginia.

The EL9 “Ultra Short” aircraft, designed to carry nine passengers, boasts the ability to take off and land in just 150 feet. This is made possible through the use of hybrid-electric propulsion and blown-lift aerodynamics. CEO Marc Allen emphasized, “We’re giving our teams the resources they need to get our Ultra Short aircraft into the hands of our customers“. In addition to their US expansion, the company has also broadened its R&D facility in Bleienbach, Switzerland.

Electra’s plans for the EL9 include flight testing in 2027, with FAA certification expected by late 2029, and service entry in 2030. The company has already secured over 2,200 provisional orders from more than 60 customers worldwide. This represents a potential revenue stream exceeding $13 billion.

  • The aircraft promises to deliver 2.5x the payload of helicopters.
  • It also offers a 10x longer range than helicopters.
  • Moreover, it operates at 70% lower costs.
