Sri Lanka Revives Electronic Travel Authorization for Global Tourists

Sri Lanka has reinstated the mandate for all foreign visitors to secure an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their arrival. This change, effective from October 15, 2025, is a part of the nation’s efforts to streamline travel procedures and stimulate tourism. This follows the temporary discontinuation of its eVisa system due to a Supreme Court verdict.

The reactivation of the ETA system enables travelers to apply for entry permits online, drastically minimizing the necessity for visa applications upon arrival. The application procedure is uncomplicated and requires only essential documentation:

  • Personal details
  • Passport information
  • Travel dates
  • Intended destination within Sri Lanka

This initiative is anticipated to positively influence Sri Lanka’s tourism sector by simplifying the visa process for international visitors. The country aspires to draw more tourists, especially from regions with robust travel connections like the United Kingdom, India, and the Middle East. This is done by facilitating travel planning to this destination, renowned for its diverse culture, breathtaking landscapes, and rich history.
