Accelerating Production: Tesla’s Cybercab at the Giga Texas Factory
Tesla is making significant strides in its Cybercab project, with the installation of new equipment at the Giga Texas facility. This move is part of the company’s preparation for the launch of its dedicated robotaxi service.
Recent drone footage reveals considerable upgrades to the structural pack area. These include new mezzanine floors and production equipment specifically designed for the two-seat autonomous vehicle.
The Cybercab, which was unveiled in October 2024, is a unique vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals. It’s designed exclusively for Tesla’s robotaxi network.
CEO Elon Musk has announced plans to initiate limited autonomous operations in Austin by June 2025. The operations will commence with 10 vehicles and eventually scale to 1,000 units. The company’s ultimate goal is to achieve a production run rate of 2 million Cybercabs per year when fully ramped.
Tesla’s innovative “Unboxed” manufacturing process for the Cybercab uses just 80 structural parts. This is a significant reduction compared to the over 200 parts used in the Model Y, enabling mass production at an estimated cost of under $30,000.
The vehicle will utilize inductive charging and is projected to offer rides at $0.20 per mile. This could potentially undercut traditional ride-hailing services by 80%.
