Super Typhoon Ragasa Forces Hong Kong Airport to Suspend 700+ Flights

Hong Kong International Airport enforced a 36-hour flight suspension from September 23-25, 2025, due to the impending threat of Super Typhoon Ragasa. This resulted in the disruption of over 700 flights and left thousands of passengers stranded.

The storm, christened the “King of Storms” by China’s meteorological agency, unleashed hurricane-force winds of up to 230km/h. It was deemed the most potent storm worldwide in 2025.

Cathay Pacific Airways had to cancel over 500 flights. Other significant carriers such as Emirates, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, and Qantas also had to halt operations.

  • The typhoon necessitated the shutdown of several airports in the region, including:
    • Shenzhen International Airport
    • Macau International Airport

Despite the massive disruption, Hong Kong International Airport managed to process approximately 600 scheduled flights on September 23 before the full closure was implemented.

Flight operations began to gradually resume from midnight on September 25. The Airport Authority provided stranded passengers with basic supplies and amenities during the suspension period.

The typhoon ultimately inflicted over $100 million in damage across the region.
