Orlando International Airport Pioneers in Electric Air Taxi Testing with FAA
Orlando International Airport (MCO) has recently concluded a pioneering three-day assessment in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration. This groundbreaking exercise aimed at testing the integration of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into the National Airspace System. The simulation was conducted at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center in New Jersey, focusing on how electric air taxis could operate alongside traditional aircraft in Orlando’s airspace.
Utilizing the Human-in-the-Loop modeling, air traffic controllers from MCO tested various integration scenarios. This was in preparation for the anticipated arrival of commercial air taxi services. Notably, the airport is only the second in the U.S. to participate in such advanced FAA assessments. This positions Orlando as a leader in the development of Advanced Air Mobility.
MCO has identified two potential vertiport sites and aims to have air taxi services operational within two years. This could potentially transform regional transportation in Central Florida.
