Joby Aviation’s SuperPilot Logs 7,000 Autonomous Miles in Military Exercise
Joby Aviation has successfully demonstrated its SuperPilot autonomous flight technology in a landmark military exercise. The technology logged over 7,000 miles across more than 40 hours in a Cessna Caravan, all without a pilot onboard.
The demonstration took place during the Resolute Force Pacific (REFORPAC), a Department-Level Exercise led by Pacific Air Forces. The autonomous flights were managed from ground control stations, primarily from over 3,000 miles away at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. Meanwhile, a safety pilot was on hand to monitor system performance.
Joby’s SuperPilot, integrated into a Cessna Caravan 208 platform, executed various missions. These included:
- Rapid cargo deliveries
- Hub-and-spoke logistics
- Inter-island transport
- Intelligence surveillance reconnaissance profiles
The aircraft successfully operated in all airspace classes under both visual and instrument flight rules.
“The exercise demonstrated SuperPilot’s ability to operate in complex, real-world scenarios with the precision and reliability demanded by the U.S. government,” said Greg Bowles, Chief Policy Officer at Joby. The Department of Defense has requested $9.4 billion in its FY26 budget to advance autonomous aircraft programs.
