Unveiling Google’s 2025 Holiday Travel Booking Trends

Google has recently unveiled its updated holiday travel insights for 2025, highlighting significant changes in traveler behavior and optimal booking strategies. The insights, derived from four years of aggregated Google Flights data, reveal that mid-sized U.S. cities are becoming popular for Thanksgiving travel. Meanwhile, warmer international destinations are topping the charts for Christmas and New Year’s searches.

The data also sheds light on the best times to book flights for budget-conscious travelers. For domestic flights, it’s recommended to book 39 days before departure. On the other hand, international flights should be booked at least 49 days in advance to secure the lowest prices. When it comes to holiday-specific travel, Thanksgiving flights are cheapest when booked 35 days ahead. Christmas flights, however, should be secured 51 days before departure.

The report emphasizes a rising trend in domestic holiday travel to mid-sized cities. As for international travelers, they seem to be “opting for palm trees over fir trees” as colder temperatures approach in many parts of the U.S. The report also suggests flying from Monday through Wednesday and considering layovers to maximize savings.
