China Development Bank Invests in 80 Airbus A320neo Jets in Multi-Billion Dollar Deal

China Development Bank Financial Leasing has confidently signaled its trust in the aviation market’s recovery by placing a significant order for 80 Airbus A320neo family aircraft. This order stands as the second-largest by a lessor in 2024.

The announcement, made on September 11, detailed that the order comprises of 65 A321neo and 15 A320neo aircraft. The delivery of these aircraft is scheduled between 2030 and 2032. The underlying objective of this deal is to modernize CDB Aviation’s fleet structure. It aims to increase the proportion of next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft that promise up to 20% fuel savings and 50% noise reduction compared to their predecessors.

Currently, Shenzhen-based CDB Aviation operates nearly 300 aircraft, with half of them being Airbus A320 family jets. This makes it the world’s 11th-largest aircraft lessor, according to KPMG. Prior to this latest purchase, the company had approximately 80 committed aircraft orders, bringing its total order book to 160 aircraft.

This order mirrors broader industry trends, as airlines and lessors scramble to secure delivery slots extending into the next decade. Both Airbus and Boeing have virtually sold out production through 2029. The A320 family continues to be Airbus’s top-selling aircraft, with around 7,000 jets in backlog awaiting delivery.
