Stratus: The New COVID-19 Variant Causing a Surge Across the US
The XFG COVID-19 variant, also known as “Stratus”, is rapidly spreading across the United States, leading to a late summer surge in infections. Health officials report an increase in COVID-19 cases in nearly half of U.S. states, with emergency room visits escalating among all age groups.
As of September 5, 2025, the Pandemic Mitigation Collective estimates an average of 876,000 new daily infections nationwide. The weekly test positivity rate is just under 11%, while wastewater surveillance data indicates “high” levels of viral activity across the country. The surge, which began around July, has experts uncertain about when it will peak.
Updated 2025-2026 COVID vaccines targeting the LP.8.1 strain have been approved. However, confusion persists about vaccine availability and eligibility. Health experts emphasize that the current vaccines remain effective against the XFG variant, as it belongs to the omicron family.
- High-risk individuals, including adults over 65 and those with underlying conditions, are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated before the fall and winter seasons.
