Japan’s Groundbreaking $750M FugakuNEXT: Pioneering the Zetta-Scale AI Supercomputer Era
RIKEN, Japan’s leading research institute, has proudly announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Fujitsu and NVIDIA. Their collective vision? To develop FugakuNEXT, a revolutionary supercomputer set to achieve zetta-scale performance by 2030. This ambitious $750 million project symbolizes Japan’s determined bid to regain its leadership in the global supercomputing arena.
FugakuNEXT will boast a hybrid AI-HPC architecture, ingeniously merging Fujitsu’s MONAKA-X CPUs with NVIDIA GPUs. This integration will be facilitated by the innovative NVLink Fusion technology. The system is designed to deliver a staggering 600 exaFLOPS of AI performance in FP8 precision. This makes it approximately 1,000 times faster than the current generation of supercomputers. Remarkably, this marks the first instance of GPUs being utilized as primary accelerators in a flagship Japanese supercomputer.
The project is a testament to the success of its predecessor, Fugaku, which dominated the world’s supercomputing scene from 2020-2022. Fugaku played an instrumental role in COVID-19 research. FugakuNEXT will continue this legacy, with a focus on “AI for Science”. This involves automating research processes from hypothesis generation to validation across a wide range of fields. These include climate modeling, drug discovery, and enhancing disaster resilience.
