Microsoft Lens App Retirement: A Shift Towards AI-Integrated Mobile Tools

Microsoft has announced the retirement of its Lens scanning app from iOS and Android devices, effective from September 15, 2025. This marks a significant shift in the company’s mobile strategy. Users can continue using the app’s scanning capabilities until December 15, 2025, after which the functionality will be discontinued.

The tech giant is encouraging users to transition to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which offers built-in scanning features as part of its broader AI-powered suite. This move is a reflection of Microsoft’s strategy to consolidate individual utility apps into comprehensive AI-driven platforms.

Previously scanned content will remain accessible as long as users keep the Lens app installed on their devices.

New Features in Microsoft Ecosystem

Microsoft has also announced new features for its ecosystem. These include:

  • File preview support for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in the Copilot mobile app
  • New automation capabilities in Teams using emoji reactions to trigger workflows
