Major Efficiency Initiative: Google Trims 35% of Small Team Managers
Google has significantly reduced its managerial workforce, eliminating 35% of managers overseeing small teams with fewer than three direct reports over the past year. This information was disclosed by Brian Welle, VP of People Analytics and Performance, during an all-hands meeting. These cuts are a key part of CEO Sundar Pichai’s broader efficiency initiative aimed at reducing bureaucracy and streamlining operations.
“We have to be more efficient as we scale up so we don’t solve everything with headcount,” Pichai emphasized during the meeting. Notably, many of the affected managers have transitioned to individual contributor roles, thereby continuing their journey with the company rather than opting to leave.
The restructuring is in line with Google’s previous workforce reduction measures. This includes a 6% workforce reduction in 2023 and ongoing voluntary exit programs across several product areas. The major areas affected by these programs include:
