U.S. Tourism Takes a Hit: Canadian Visits Drop 25% Amid Trump Policies

Canadian tourism to the United States has seen a sharp decline of 25.2% year-to-date. The number of car arrivals in July alone dropped a staggering 37%. More and more, visitors are opting for alternative destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, and Western Europe. According to Tourism Economics data, this dramatic decline is directly linked to Canadian concerns over President Trump’s tariffs and economic policies.

“Canadians were already concerned over their personal finances, but they’ve taken the rhetoric and policy announcements from the U.S. administration very personally,”

Says Amir Eylon, president and CEO of market research firm Longwoods International. A striking 80% of Canadian travelers cite U.S. tariffs and economic policy as major negative influences on their travel decisions.

U.S. destinations are scrambling to respond. Meet Boston, for instance, has adjusted its international visitor forecast from a 15% growth to a 10% decline for 2025. The organization is planning winter campaigns and hosting events in Toronto to win back Canadian visitors. Other cities such as Portland and Rochester, which are located near the border, are also feeling the impact of this unprecedented tourism boycott.
