Flying Acres Homeowners Secure Historic Norman Grier Field After Decades-Long Effort

After a persistent effort spanning decades, the Flying Acres Homeowners Association (FAHA) has triumphantly acquired Norman Grier Field (S36), a privately-owned public-use airport situated near Kent, Washington. The purchase was officially concluded on July 31, 2025, through New Crest Airpark, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary established by FAHA to oversee the property on behalf of the airpark community.

Originally christened as Crest Airpark, the field was constructed in the early 1960s by Al and Virginia Knechtel. It has since been a hub for general aviation in the Pacific Northwest. The airpark community now comprises 114 homes, with 93 of the lot owners contributing equal amounts for the airport purchase.

FAHA was initially formed in 1992 with the explicit objective of securing permanent access to the airport for homeowners. After years of negotiation, the association reached a pivotal agreement in 2008. This agreement granted them the right to purchase the airport when it was put up for sale on or before December 31, 2025.

“Now, more than 30 years later, FAHA becomes the third steward of the airfield — bringing the story full circle and reaffirming the community’s strong commitment to preserving the airport’s future,” association officials noted.
