Meta’s Hypernova Smart Glasses: A New Era in Augmented Reality

Meta is gearing up to reveal its most ambitious augmented reality product yet at the Connect conference in September 2025—the Hypernova smart glasses. This device, featuring the company’s first consumer-ready display technology, is priced at $800. It signifies a substantial advancement in Meta’s AR strategy and could potentially herald the start of a smartphone replacement era.

The Hypernova glasses are designed with a compact digital display in the right lens, providing a 20-degree field of view. This display is capable of:

  • Showing text messages,
  • Presenting navigation information, and
  • Facilitating AI-powered interactions.

What makes this product truly revolutionary is the accompanying neural wristband. It employs electromyography (EMG) sensors to detect electrical signals from hand movements, thereby enabling users to control the glasses through subtle gestures.

These glasses, developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica (the parent company of Ray-Ban), mark Meta’s transition from voice-only smart glasses to genuine augmented reality devices. Meta has been actively engaging third-party developers, especially those specializing in generative AI, to develop applications for this new platform. Since 2020, Meta’s Reality Labs division has invested nearly $70 billion in the development of this technology.
