Air Canada Resumes Nearly Full Operations Post-Strike, Announces Extensive Compensation
Air Canada has announced its plan to resume nearly full network operations by August 22. This comes after a four-day strike by 10,000 flight attendants that grounded the airline since August 16. The carrier reached a mediated settlement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) on August 19.
“We deeply regret and apologize for the impact on customers of this labour disruption,” said Michael Rousseau, Air Canada’s President and CEO. The airline is now implementing an exceptional compensation policy covering reasonable accommodation, meals, ground transportation, and other out-of-pocket expenses for affected passengers.
The enhanced goodwill policy applies to customers whose travel was disrupted between August 15-23, 2025, going beyond legal obligations. Passengers can claim reimbursement for:
- Hotel stays
- Meals
- Transportation costs
- Flights booked on other airlines during the disruption
Claims must be submitted with receipts through the airline’s customer relations portal.
Air Canada expects to process claims within four to six weeks due to anticipated volume. The strike centered on disputes over wages below inflation and market value, with flight attendants seeking payment for ground work performed before takeoff and after landing.
