OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5 on August 7, 2025, touting it as their “smartest, fastest, most useful model yet.” This new AI model merges the reasoning capabilities of the o-series with the swift response times of traditional GPT models. As CEO Sam Altman puts it, this creates an AI with “PhD-level intelligence.”
GPT-5 ushers in a groundbreaking approach with intrinsic thinking capabilities. It autonomously determines when to provide rapid responses versus when to engage in detailed, step-by-step reasoning. The model boasts impressive scores of 94.6% on AIME 2025 math problems and 74.9% on SWE-bench coding challenges, setting new industry standards.
Furthermore, GPT-5 is 45% less likely to contain factual errors compared to GPT-4o. For the first time, OpenAI has made advanced reasoning capabilities available to all ChatGPT users, including those using the free version.
