GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications Spark ‘Ozempic Face’ Solutions in Skincare Industry

The rapidly growing market of GLP-1 weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy has sparked an unexpected boom in the beauty industry. As millions of Americans experience rapid weight loss from these drugs, many are grappling with a side effect now known as “Ozempic face” – characterized by sagging skin, sunken eyes, and a more gaunt appearance.

Seizing this trend, beauty companies have started to launch specialized skincare lines. SkinCeuticals recently introduced a serum specifically designed for GLP-1 users. Similarly, plastic surgeon Dr. Julius Few has developed DermaReverse, asserting that GLP-1 drugs influence “skin biology” differently than traditional weight loss methods. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2 in 5 GLP-1 patients are contemplating cosmetic surgery, with facelift procedures witnessing an 8% surge between 2022 and 2023.

However, dermatologists stress that while these specialized products may aid in hydration and collagen support, the facial changes are primarily due to rapid fat loss rather than the medications themselves. They advocate for the use of retinoids, vitamin C serums, and consistent sunscreen as the most effective treatments for maintaining skin health during weight loss.
