Jeju Island Rolls Out Multilingual Guidelines for Tourists Amid Surge in Visits
Jeju Island, a popular vacation hotspot in South Korea, has taken a proactive step towards managing overtourism. In response to concerns about visitor misconduct, the island has introduced its first multilingual behavioral guidelines for foreign tourists. This initiative comes at a time when the island is grappling with record-breaking tourist numbers, having welcomed over 7 million visitors in 2025. This influx has put significant pressure on public spaces and local communities.
The guidelines, available in Korean, English, and Chinese, aim to address a range of issues. These include:
- Littering
- Public intoxication
- Noise disturbances
- Inappropriate behavior at cultural sites
Around 8,000 copies of these guidelines have been distributed to educate tourists about local laws and cultural norms. Fines will be imposed for repeat violations, ensuring that visitors respect the local environment and community.
This measure is part of a broader regional effort to manage tourism growth sustainably, while preserving community well-being. Jeju Island’s tourism revenue reached a record 9.26 trillion won in 2024. Interestingly, nearly 70% of international visitors to the island come from China.
