Sony Announces $50 Price Hike for PlayStation 5 Amid U.S. Tariff Challenges

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed a $50 price increase for all PlayStation 5 console models in the United States. This change, effective from August 21, 2025, is a response to what Sony describes as “a challenging economic environment” due to escalating tariff costs.

The revised pricing structure positions the standard PlayStation 5 at $549.99, the Digital Edition at $499.99, and the high-end PS5 Pro at $749.99. Sony’s decision mirrors similar price adjustments made in European markets earlier this year. It’s worth noting that the prices for PlayStation 5 accessories will remain the same.

This development is a direct result of the Trump administration’s broad tariffs on imports from major manufacturing hubs such as China and Japan. These tariffs have put a strain on the supply chains of electronics manufacturers. Sony is following in the footsteps of Microsoft, which increased Xbox console prices by $80-$100 in May, passing the increased costs onto consumers.

The price adjustment impacts one of the gaming industry’s most popular consoles. The PlayStation 5 recently hit a milestone of 80 million units sold worldwide. Sony is now tasked with navigating global trade tensions and manufacturing cost pressures.
