Microsoft Authenticator Phases Out Password Storage
Microsoft has initiated the removal of password storage functionality from its Authenticator app, effective from August 19, 2025. This marks the culmination of a three-month transition period. Consequently, users can no longer access saved passwords in the app, and all stored credentials, including unsaved generated passwords, have been permanently deleted.
This change was announced as a part of Microsoft’s broader move towards a passwordless future. The tech giant is encouraging users to transition to Microsoft Edge’s built-in password manager or export their data to third-party alternatives.
The company’s decision impacts millions of users who depended on Authenticator for password management and autofill functionality. Despite the app continuing to support two-factor authentication and passkeys, users who did not export their passwords before the August 1 deadline have permanently lost access to their stored credentials.
Microsoft justified this move by citing security concerns, noting that over 99% of daily identity attacks still target passwords.
