FAA Approves Major Weight-Saving Upgrades for Fire Boss Aircraft
Fire Boss has secured FAA approval for significant engineering improvements to its amphibious firefighting aircraft, resulting in over 125 pounds of weight savings and enhanced operational capabilities. These upgrades represent a major advancement for the specialized aircraft used in aerial firefighting operations worldwide.
The most significant improvement is the introduction of the True Blue Power TB60 Lithium-Ion aircraft battery, replacing traditional lead-acid systems. Additional enhancements include a redesigned internal float compartment system and a new single-piece nose fork that reduces weight while improving maintenance efficiency. The hydraulic pump has been relocated to improve the aircraft’s center of gravity, making it easier to maintain proper weight and balance across multiple loading configurations.
Other notable improvements include:
- Switching from lead to steel ballast for environmental and safety benefits
- 19-pound lighter floats
- A new scoop lockout gate for enhanced safety during water scooping operations
Almost all improvements are available as retrofits for existing Fire Boss aircraft. The Fire Boss, manufactured in South Saint Paul, Minnesota, is an Air Tractor AT-802F equipped with specialized Wipline scooping floats capable of collecting 800 gallons in just 15 seconds.
