Recent General Aviation Accidents Underscore Pilot Errors in Landing Operations

The FAA has recently reported a series of general aviation incidents that underscore the ongoing challenges associated with pilot errors during landing operations. These accidents, according to agency statements, transpired across multiple states including Oregon, Florida, and South Carolina between August 12-14, 2025.

Among the notable incidents were:

  • A Vans RV-14 that crashed into a ditch at Skydive Oregon Airport in Molalla, Oregon, around 11 a.m. on August 14.
  • A Piper PA-12 that slid off the runway during takeoff from Inverness Airport in Florida around 7:15 p.m. the same day.
  • The gear of a Velocity XL RG that collapsed during landing at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina on August 12.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s August 2025 accident briefs reveal that several of these GA accidents were caused by pilot error, including failures to maintain directional control during landing, extend landing gear, and properly manage fuel systems. These incidents highlight the continued importance of proper training and adherence to standard operating procedures in general aviation.
