NC and GA Pioneer Nation’s First Interstate Advanced Air Mobility Corridor

North Carolina and Georgia have taken a groundbreaking step towards the future of transportation. They have jointly announced the creation of the nation’s first interstate “highway in the sky”. This advanced air mobility corridor will connect Charlotte and Atlanta, serving as a conduit for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOLs) and uncrewed aerial systems. The initiative was unveiled on August 12, 2025, by the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation and Georgia Department of Transportation.

“This corridor is a launchpad for innovation,” said Nick Short, director of the NCDOT Division of Aviation. “It will transform how we connect people, move critical freight and strengthen links between our communities — all while advancing smarter, cleaner and more sustainable transportation systems.”

The corridor is poised to serve as a real-world testbed for next-generation air mobility. It holds the potential to:

  • Reduce ground congestion
  • Improve travel times
  • Support regional economic growth

The project team is also coordinating with South Carolina to ensure regional airspace integration. This could potentially pave the way for a tristate AAM network.
