UK Enforces Stringent Regulations on Risky Cosmetic Procedures
The UK government has unveiled stringent regulations aimed at curbing hazardous cosmetic procedures, such as Brazilian butt lifts. This move comes in the wake of a dramatic increase in botched treatments, resulting in victims being “maimed, injured and in need of urgent NHS care.”
As per the new regulations, only healthcare professionals who are registered with the Care Quality Commission are permitted to carry out high-risk procedures. These include non-surgical Brazilian butt lifts and filler injections into breasts and genitals. Clinics offering lower-risk treatments, such as Botox and lip fillers, are required to adhere to strict standards and secure local authority licenses.
The crackdown is a response to alarming reports of unqualified individuals administering invasive treatments in unsafe environments. These include homes, hotels, and even public toilets. The charity, Save Face, has assisted over 750 women who have been victims of unsafe procedures. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons recorded nearly 27,500 surgical procedures in 2024, marking a five percent increase from the previous year.
“These measures will help protect people from the devastating consequences of poorly performed cosmetic procedures,” stated junior health minister Karin Smyth. The regulations also prohibit under-18s from undergoing risky cosmetic procedures, unless authorized by health professionals. This is a step towards shielding children from “dangerous beauty trends on social media.”
